Our 2014-15 Funding: A New Process, Strategy

The J. Warren and Lois McClure Foundation is proud to announce a new online process for the submission of projects for funding consideration for the 2014-2015 school year. Details can be found at A deadline of February 27, 2014 has been set for submission of Letters of Interest. The Foundation’s strategy is to promote both solid short-term gains and longer-term systemic change in order to increase Vermonters’ access to postsecondary education opportunities. Our goal is to help education become aligned with workforce realities in Vermont in order to build an optimal, diversified, and competitive state economy and enhance opportunities for a higher quality of life for all Vermonters.

Emerging Themes as We Look Ahead

The McClure Foundation continues to be guided by a long-term vision of a vibrant state economy that supports optimal quality of life for Vermonters. We believe, as does Lawrence Miller, Secretary of the VT Agency of Commerce & Community Development, that educational attainment is the bedrock of economic development. This fall, a few key themes resonated from meetings such as the 2013 Grantmakers for Education Conference in Texas, Vermont’s PreK-16 Council sessions, and our own learning seminars for local funders. Planting Seeds for the Coming School Year

Spring is coming to Vermont and with it comes our beloved gardening season! We’ll finalize plans, then sow, transplant, and weed so our gardens can evolve into our visions of what they ought to be. For the McClure Foundation, too, this is the season to review the strengths and weaknesses of past funding cycles and to study current state and national trends in education (the “seed catalogue” we study all winter) so that we can increase the chances of success for our 2013-2014 school year funding efforts.

Embracing the Power of Education

Education in our country is a multi-billion dollar enterprise. Because charitable giving for education is an important but small percentage of overall education funding, the member organization Grantmakers for Education (GFE) works to find the best roles for philanthropy in education.
